Golf carts in Monroe County
Nowhere in Florida is a street-legal cart worth more per mile than in the Keys. Parking in Key West is scarce and expensive, distances are short, and a four-seat LSV solves the problem that a second car makes worse. That is why Monroe County has a dense population of carts that are used as real transportation - and why so many of them need to be registered properly rather than driven on hope.
The Keys also produce the most paperwork problems we see. Carts change hands privately between neighbours and seasonal residents, often with nothing but a handwritten note, and salt air destroys the small compliance hardware faster than anywhere else in the state. Before we file anything for a Monroe County cart we look hard at two things: what you actually hold as proof of ownership, and whether the lighting, mirrors and reflectors on the cart are present and functional today, not two seasons ago.
Where an LSV can be driven here
A titled and registered LSV may be driven on Florida roads posted at 35 mph or less. In the Keys that covers a large share of the residential and downtown street grid while excluding most of the Overseas Highway. Where and how carts may cross or travel along US-1 is a state and local matter that is subject to change.
Local rules worth knowing
Monroe County is a string of islands connected by one highway, and cart use is intensely local: Key West's Old Town grid, the Islamorada village roads, the residential lanes off the Overseas Highway. Each municipality in the Keys sets its own rules, and the Overseas Highway itself is a state road with posted limits well above the LSV ceiling in most segments. Confirm local rules before you plan a route.
How we handle Monroe County registrations
We register Keys carts without anyone driving to the mainland. Upload your four cart photos, your VIN or serial photo, your ownership document and your receipts, and we review the package before it is filed. If something in it would be rejected, you hear it from us first - not from the state six weeks later.
