Why Key West runs on carts

Key West is four miles long, its Old Town grid was laid out for horses, and a parking space near Duval is a genuine asset. A street-legal cart is not a novelty here - it is the most rational vehicle on the island. Residents use them to get to work, to the marina and to the grocery store, and the short trip distances mean the range limits that bother mainland owners never come up.

Key West carts have two recurring problems, and both are documentary rather than mechanical. The first is ownership: carts trade privately between residents and seasonal owners, often with nothing more than a note, and a handwritten private-party receipt is one of the most common reasons a conversion package gets sent back. The second is corrosion - salt air ruins lighting connectors, reflector housings and mirror hardware faster than anywhere else in Florida, so the equipment that passed a look two seasons ago may not pass one today.
